John W Short of Kilmarnock
is a family firm run by Gabrielle Potts whose great-grandfather started the business back in 1906.
Whilst the precise recipe in Short’s pies is a closely guarded secret,
what isn’t a secret is the fact that only the very best ingredients are used including top quality Scottish beef.
Shorts produce 7,000 Scotch pies a week (that’s over 330,000 a year!)
for retail outlets across the West of Scotland including two football clubs.
Because Short’s pies are so delicious, one customer drove all the way from Cheshire to buy 200 of them!
“Our commitment to quality ingredients and not using preservatives or
additives means that we don’t tend to supply them further than Glasgow and Ayr,” comments Gabrielle, even though
there is quite a demand for Scotch pies south of the Border and especially among ex-pats in Canada and Australia, for example.
“But we really do care about the quality and taste of all our products,
so we just won’t compromise on that.”
